If you're busy with the practicalities of moving to Bridgeport, Connecticut, such as getting your grades transferred from your English language school in Canada to the new one in Bridgeport, and packing up all your things, odds are you don't have a lot of extra time left over to delve into the local news. However once you get there the local news will keep you up to date on all the happenings in town and provide you with discussion fodder for office water coolers and dinner parties. That is - if you know where to find it.

The Internet

Finding out what's going on in Bridgeport is as easy as typing a search query into your laptop or Smartphone. Probably the most popular site for news is www.ctpost.com, which is the online edition of the Connecticut Post. You'll have to dig a bit amongst the articles on buying a spa package in Massachusetts and updates for bigger cities like Hartford, but you will find the goings on in Bridgeport. If you find it takes too long to find, you can visit Bridgeport's page on news compilation sites like www.topix.com to have them do it for you.

Print

If you're more of a "grab a newspaper to read while drinking your coffee on the bus" type of person, there are several options to choose from at your favorite corner store. There's the Connecticut Post, which covers the whole state, from electronic manufacturing to art, as well as several publications that are smaller and more local. There's the Bridgeport News, which is part of Hersam Acorn newspapers, The Scribe, which is the University of Bridgeport student paper, and three Fairfield County papers: the business journal, the catholic news, and the weekly.

Radio

There are six regular radio stations broadcasting from Bridgeport. Bridgeport is within line of broadcast of Long Island Sound, so AM stations based out of New York are also a listening option. The most listened to variety music and news stations are 600 in the AM and 107.9 in the FM. FM 99.9 is also popular, as its music is billed as "80s, 90s, and today." Expect ads for such things as cloth diapers and windshield repair on all. Your other options include AM 1450, which is the Spanish language mix, AM 1530 which is the Gospel radio, and 89.5 FM, a sort of restriction-less broadcaster.

TV

Bridgeport isn't large enough a media market to warrant many television stations, or even its own network affiliate. You can, however, watch Channel 49, which is a Connecticut Public Television station broadcast from Bridgeport. Most people prefer to watch Edmonton botox newsmagazine segments from the ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX affiliates (Channels 8, 3, 30, and 61 respectively), which are broadcast from New Haven or Hartford.
